1/4 Zone Formation/Structure

May 9, 2025
  • Create an inviting option for opposition (e.g. on intercept mark or free kick) to lure a predictable entry
  • Encourage opposition to kick to the J1

  • Establish fast roll-over movement with 18 players

  • Ruck/key player to position themselves as a destination point at J3 (to negate the common down-the-line kick)

  • Saturate one-quarter of the ground with 18 players to apply high pressure

  • Aim to force turnovers inside your defensive 50 corridor

    • Ideally, force into "Turnover Zone"

  • Emphasise relentless pressure acts – no easy exits

  • Key principle: Defend space/ground, not just individual opponents

Drills (Scenario Play-Out)

  • 11v6 Setup:

    • Opposition has 6 defenders

    • Confined to ¼ of the ground

    • Their objective: attempt to kick through a web-style press

    • Our objective: force predictable play and turnovers

  • Key coaching points:

    • Cage the opposition

    • Force them inside the area provided (into pressure zone)

    • Cut off the J3 outlet

    • Maintain pressure to force the ball back inside
