DRAIN THE VAIN MOVEMENT

Managing Opposition Momentum & Regaining Control

  1. When the opposition gains an adrenaline rush, maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities, we must disrupt their flow and regain control.
  2. Our focus should be on winning back possession and shifting the game towards our numerical advantage in the back half.
  3. Utilize two spare players behind the ball to establish an 8v6 advantage and create controlled ball movement.
  4. Transition the ball forward with intent, restricting opposition access and denying them possession.
  5. Implement a combination of tempo control, composure, slow play, and delay tactics to neutralize the opposition’s momentum and remove their adrenaline rush.
  6. Frustrate the opposition by limiting their opportunities and forcing them into reactive play.
  7. Shift the momentum back in our favor through structured ball movement and decision-making.

Training Drill: G6 Scenario

To simulate this, use half-field from a Centre Wing Stoppage and involve G6D & G6F in a structured drill to move the ball forward.

  • Start with a 6v6 setup in the stoppage.
  • Introduce a Forward (G6F) pushing up and a Defender (G6D) joining from the back half, creating an 8v6 advantage at the stoppage.
  • Emphasize cascading ball movement, recognizing that we will be outnumbered in the forward line (5v6 scenario).
  • Encourage forwards to stay active, create movement, and open space, ensuring multiple options ahead for the 8v6 advantage to carry the ball through handball chains.

This drill will reinforce numerical superiority, controlled transition, and structured decision-making under pressure.
