1v1 → Man-on-Man Defensive Principle

May 9, 2025

Tactical Focus:

  • Apply tight defensive pressure in 1-on-1 contests.

  • Designed to:

    • Restrict opposition's access to the ball,

    • Deny clean disposals,

    • Break down their structure by frustrating key players.

Mindset & Presence:

  • Observe opposition body language when they’re shut down—force frustration and hesitation.

  • This builds “red time” pressure—aggressive, high-effort defensive presence.

  • Learn to transition from “red” to “green”—once control is gained, switch into attacking/go-play style.

  • Goal: Shut down enough to change momentum.

Drills:

  • 10v10 contest drill (or similar setup)

    • Run in 10-minute intervals to replicate match intensity and shifts in momentum.

    • Focus on impacting contests and reinforcing locate-and-defend principles.

  • Include momentum swing scenarios:
Let play evolve long enough to simulate real game shifts before switching to offensive structure (e.g., “our ball” setups).

  • Rotate bibs for both teams to reassign matchups regularly, keeping the contest fresh and adaptable.
