2x Triangles – Forward Leading Pattern

May 9, 2025
  • Set up a basic 2-3-1 formation, creating 2 triangles

  • Provide:

    • 2 hit-up options

    • 2 crossover leads

    • 2 out-the-back fast-play hit zones (both ends up in a C-shape)

  • Maintain constant movement

  • Enables momentum shift when opposition defends well in 1v1 contests

  • Forces opposition defenders to reposition, causing confusion about who to cover and which lead to defend

Drills

  • Scenario play-out

  • Create 6 groups of 1v1s within the 2x triangle formations

  • Use varied players (e.g. mids) to hit designated points in the triangle formation

    • Execute 3 different variations

  • Can be applied in defensive transition setups

  • Forwards must anticipate ball movement:

    • Triangle works clockwise and anticlockwise based on play direction
