Forward Pattern Play

May 9, 2025
  • Maintain constant movement

  • Execute repeat ‘tick’ leads

  • Avoid low-percentage long shots from outside range

  • For boundary free kicks or marks, look inside for a hit-up option

  • Use momentum swing from the outside or just inside the 50m arc

  • Structure options around the arc (e.g. Sydney-style set-ups)

  • Last inside option should ideally be an I-Shape formation

Drills

  • Play-out drillRisk vs Reward focus

  • Five marks before taking an I-Shape shot on goal

  • 1v1 contests across 6 groups

  • Continuous 1v1 "Run on Tick" formation:

    • Use designated bib colours

    • Reference colour as set by the coach

  • Final hit-up: Colour to colour transition
