Left & Right of I-Shape Formation (Forward Line Structure)

Key Concepts:

  • When we place a spare behind the ball, we use the I-Shape formation to hide our spare defender from the opposition.

  • Set up a huddle to the left or right of the I-Shape in the forward 50.

  • Opponents will generally follow into the huddle, allowing us to hide and isolate their spare defender.

  • Order of setup: Position the spare behind the ball first, then form the huddle.

  • Use the open side of the huddle to position your most dangerous fast or agile player—this enables a lateral lead into space for a hit-up target.

  • The huddle formation should be 5v6 (us vs them).

Tactical Benefits:

  • Traditional forward setups expose the spare defender, but this structure conceals them effectively.

  • By hiding the spare defender within the huddle, we neutralize their impact.

Drill – Scenario Simulation:

  • Play out the match scenario.

  • Start with a Behind-the-Arc (BTA) stoppage.

  • From there, initiate movement with a fast player breaking from the huddle, receiving the ball on the move.

  • Execute a lateral lead and hit-up into the forward entry zone.
