T-Shape Formation – Forward Line Structure

May 9, 2025

Tactical Setup:

  • When we have a dominant ruck:

    • Ruck taps to the 12 o’clock position to trigger our hit zone.

    • Create this setup from a centre bounce stoppage.

  • T-Shape forward line:

    • Forwards engage in dynamic sprint movement to lead into the tap zone and create space.

  • Midfielders:

    • Move forward with momentum to gather and release the ball cleanly.

Key Strategies:

  • Creates momentum shifts, especially effective when ruck personnel changes or hit zone positioning is varied.

  • Transition through handball shape/scramble handball:

    • Connects the mids and forwards during flow from clearance.

  • Best used in fast play scenarios, particularly when:

    • There's strong communication between ruck, mids, and T-shape forwards.

    • 50/50 clearances are expected and need to be capitalised on quickly.

Drills:

  • Play out match scenario using set stoppage starting points.

  • Rotate personnel to build versatility and develop multiple players' understanding of their role in the structure.
